So, in effect, Kansas has no say as to the marriage laws within their state, and this is an infringement of state sovereignty.

The Feds don't have jurisdiction over this in Kansas. Legally, Kansas does. The Feds have the say in areas under their jurisdiction, and not elsewhere.

This is destined for the Supremes.
That's what I've been saying. The federal government is acting within its jurisdiction in giving FEDERAL benefits to married gay couples, and Kansas can continue to act within its own jurisdiction by not giving STATE benefits or STATE recognition to married gay couples.

I don't see anything like trampling on Kansas's "states' rights," here.

I'm curious what TMM thinks of this. He has always been a big Kansas booster.

Gay marriage, the Danish language, and Christian bakeries? Honestly Ben, instead of revisiting old arguments from other threads, why not address the issue posed in the OP?
Did you miss my Dred Scott reference?

I mean, I know this is the Off Topic, but not one of your posts actually concerns the proposed Kansas law. Under which, it appears you just have to keep calling the fire department until you find a civil servant who would not let a taxpayer's house burn to the ground rather than help a same-sex couple.
Remember I left a jurisdiction that fired a public school teacher over a letter to the editor. I've experienced first hand that it's not about equality, it's about stripping rights from other people.

They can't offer federal benefits to couples who aren't recognized as married within Kansas.

Kansas can continue to act within its own jurisdiction by not giving STATE benefits or STATE recognition to married gay couples.
The opposition to this law indicates that you'll just run roughshod over any state. This is a violation of the state's ban on gay marriage. Kansas has the right to reject this within Kansas.

This is no different then Dred Scott permitting slavery in all 50 states irrespective of state bans to the contrary.

I don't see how that violates any "states' rights," considering states can still deny state-level benefits if they're one of the backward, bigoted states.

Don't quote me on this, but I recall reading about the growth of the English language. Something like more than half of the words in the English language only entered the vocabulary in the last 100 years. The sheer size of the language is the equivalent of 4-5 other languages.

Most of the new words are due to technological advancement.

Sure, a few hundred years ago, English was just another European tribal dialect... spoken by old Europe barbarians and their inbred kinfolk. And in the UK, it remains such... for the most part.

You think Democrats don't do this? Only they use fear and hate of Republicans in general rather than any specific demographic. And paranoia, plenty of that. The fact that their version of scaremongering does not, at present, involve bashing a specific class seems trivial. Especially given that neither side is really interested in seriously addressing real problems.

No. Seriously the Republicans keep supporting things like the story in the op. This isn't some bizarre outlier, this is the kind of stuff you see every damn week in state senates and houses all across the red states. Hell they're hardly any better at federal level. Why the hell would the Dems need to artificially generate any fear or hate when they can just tell people to read the latest news story and see for themselves?

"Why would the Republicans need to artificially generate any fear or hate when liberals are trying to suppress Christianity, subvert the Constitution, and destroy individual freedom?"

You're too emotionally invested in this to see the reality of it. Each side has a chosen--from my POV, wildly distorted and hysterical--narrative that they flog endlessly to generate fervor and cash. I'll allow that the Democrats are generally closer to my own beliefs. But they distort plenty.

Liberals think they are building a utopia. That's nowhere near the truth. The truth is they don't have a clue. But they hate anyone who will stand in their way of building this utopia. In large part conservatism is a reaction against liberalism. A lot of it is wrong.

I have a hard time picturing Hitler's regime maintaining control of an area the size of Russia, with or without our intervention. We did speed things up, though.
